I'm struggling to pay rent

You don't have to choose between rent and other necessities.

Section 8 (Housing Choice Vouchers) — caps your rent at 30% of income.
Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) apartments — affordable rental buildings that don't require a voucher.
